Teenage Stretch Marks

Stretch Marks in Teenagers

Stretch Marks in Teenagers can occur If the tissues under the skin lose their elastic properties, stretch marks can form. Though they can occur in men or women of any age, they are well known among teenagers. Stretch marks are the result of small tears which occur in the dermis layer of the skin.

Though the tears heal, the scars can be permanent. Stretch marks will usually start out as being red or purple on those who have light skin, but will eventually become lighter. Some may also fade away.

One of the reasons why stretch marks occur so often in teens is because of the bodily changes that happen during puberty. When a person is about 13 years of age, they may start to gain weight, and a number of hormonal changes will take place in their bodies.

Gaining weight is not the primary cause of stretch marks, and even people who are slim can get them. Teenagers tend to have growth spurts, and this is known to be one cause for stretch marks.

There are a number of factors which make some people more likely to get stretch marks than others. Genetics is one factor. If you have a mother or father who has stretch marks, there is a good chance you will get them also. If you have skin which is dry, you are likely to get this condition.

People who have light skin are more prone to getting stretch marks, though they can occur in people with darker skin as well. Women who become pregnant have a 50% chance of getting stretch marks, and those who quickly gain or lose weight may get them as well.

While many people think that only women get stretch marks, this is not the case. Men can also get them, especially those who are bodybuilders. The underlying cause for stretch marks is still debated by doctors, but some believe it is the result of hormonal changes in the body.

Other  believe that it is a result of obesity or tearing the dermis layer of the skin due to extreme exercises. It is likely that all of these things play a role in why some people are more prone to getting stretch marks than others.

Stretch marks can be very unattractive, but are not known to cause any health problems. The biggest problem they cause is psychological more than physical. Many people who have them become self concious and have a low view of themselves.
