 Pregnancy Stretchmarks

Pregnancy Stretch marks are a source of dread for many people, especially women. For women who are pregnant, stretch marks can be one of the most unpleasant changes in their bodies. Studies show that more than 50% of all women who become pregnant will get stretch marks. They will typically appear in the later stages of the pregnancy, and while many of them can be found on the abdomen, others can be found on the thighs, hips, and breasts.

Women who have lighter skin will have pregnancy stretch marks which are pink in color, while women with darker skin will have stretch marks which are lighter than the skin which encircles it. Stretch marks are a result of the collagen in the skin which has been divided. They are not painful, but can cause the skin to itch in places where they appear. There are a number of different reasons why stretch marks may appear, and some women  are more likely to get them than others. If you have a sister or mother who has stretch marks, it is likely that you will get them as well.

If you have been pregnant before and pregnancy stretch marks appeared, they are likely to appear if you become pregnant again. They may also be the exact same stretch marks that you saw in your previous pregnancy. Women who gain weight tend to gain stretch marks more than women who are slim. You eating habits also play a role in whether or not you will get stretch marks, and your ethnicity plays a role as well. African American women are less likely to get stretch marks during pregnancy than Caucasian women.

Stretch marks will sometimes fade after a woman has given birth, but many women find them to be unpleasant. They are a natural part of the pregnancy process, and is one of the many changes women will notice in their bodies. As a child grows in the womb, the skin will be stretched farther than usual. This occurs when the collagen in the skin separates. When women become pregnant they gain weight, and weight gain is the primary cause of stretch marks. After pregnancy, many women return to their normal weight, and the stretch marks are no longer easily visible.

Miniature tears in the dermis layer of the skin are one of the primary causes of stretch marks. Even though they are a dread for women who have become pregnant, they are normal, and do not cause health problems or other ailments.
