Basic Information on Stretch Marks

What Are Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a type of scar which is often the result of obesity, bodybuilding, or pregnancy. Young people who are going through puberty may also get stretch marks. When the skin is overstretched, the assembly of collagen is disturbed. When this happens, a number of scars may appear. When stretch marks first appear, they will often have a color of purple or red. The color of the stretch marks will eventually become lighter.

When you touch an area of the skin which is covered by stretch marks, it will feel soft. The human skin is composed of three layers, and these are the dermis, subcutaneous stratum, and the epidermis. The epidermis is the outermost layer, and is the one where the stretch marks are most visible. The dermis is the middle layer, and the subcutaneous layer is located beneath it. The stretch marks are created in the dermis, and this is the layer of skin which allows the skin to keep its shape.

If the dermis is stretched repeatedly, it will begin to lose its elasticity. The structures within the dermis will break, and this is when the stretch marks will become visible. Once the skin returns to its regular shape, the stretch marks are harder to detect. Stretch marks can appear on different parts of the body. They appear most often in areas of the body which contain large amounts of fat. Stretch marks will often appear on the breasts, abdomen, buttocks, and thighs.

Are Stretch Marks Harmful

Despite the undesirable look that stretch marks can bring to the body, they do not cause any adverse health problems. They also do not keep the body from operating properly. However, many people find them to be unpleasing to the eye, and they can be a headache for those who want to go out on the beach. They are also a source of frustration for bodybuilders, people who make living off showcasing a well toned physique.  While stretch marks may not cause health problems, they are also known for being one of the causes of low self esteem.

People who are obese tend to suffer more from stretch marks than others. However, stretch marks are not limited to those who are overweight. Teenagers and women who are pregnant may also get stretch marks as well. Many people try hard to avoid them, as they can be a source of humiliation and ridicule. The fact that bodybuilders get stretch marks is evidence that people of any health conditon may get them.
