Q: What are stretch marks (Striae)?
A: Stretch marks are essentially dermal scar tissue. Stretch marks can occur when the structural proteins that bind the skin (elastin and collagen) are overstressed. These precipitating stresses can typically include pregnancy, excessive weight gain or bodybuilding. When the skin is stressed in this manner, the elastin and collagen fibers reach tensile capacity, weaken and ultimately fail resulting in tears in the dermal skin layer.
